Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue![]() Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) is a division of Public Safety and consists of three divisions; Emergency Services were formally established in Steamboat Springs in 1898 with the formation of the Steamboat Springs Volunteer Fire Department (SSVFD). In 1974, the Steamboat Springs Rural Fire Protection District was established and cooperated with the Steamboat Springs Volunteer Fire Department to provide primarily ambulance/EMS services while the SSVFD provided fire and rescue services. Beginning in 2002, the Steamboat Springs Rural Fire Protection District merged with the Steamboat Springs Volunteer Fire Department. The resulting merger meant becoming a combination department instead of the historical volunteer department. With the merger, the department was restructured to provide EMS, fire suppression, fire prevention and public education services and became Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR).
