Public Education Programs

The volunteers & staff do a variety of public education events throughout the year.

WHALE PROGRAM

The W.H.A.L.E. program stands for "We have a little emergency"

The WHALE program is designed to familiarize kids with ambulance operations in the event a child needs the assistants of medics and ambulance service.

The program is run in conjuntion with the fire station tours. After a station tour is completed the children are gathered into an area for viewing. A stuffed bunny acts as the patient and children watch while the "Bunny" is put on a backboard and a c-collar applied. Kids then follow the "Bunny" into the back of the ambulance and learn about a variety of procedures. The kids learn about what a stethoscope does and how blood pressure is taken and what an oxygen mask feels like.

These procedures are show to the kids so that in the event that they might need an ambulance the experience is more relaxed and less intimidating for the child.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

Nationwide, one week out of the year is dedicated to fire prevention. 2003's Fire Prevention Week involved over 800 kids. See more information from this year's events. View highlights from 2002, 2001 or 2000 Fire Prevention Weeks.

SAFETY SEAT INSPECTIONS - New Law in Effect!

One page flyer (pdf) on the new changes:
English, Spanish

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tells us that half of the child car seats in use today are installed incorrectly without parents realizing it. Nationally over 1,000 children under age 10 die and 160,000 are injured each year as passengers in motor vehicles. The lives of you and your family could depend on using seat belts and child car seats correctly.

The Steamboat Springs Fire Department has several trained "Safety Seat Technicians" on the department to help ensure that your child is properly restrained. Complementary inspections are offered every Wednesday between the hours of 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Please email or call 879-0700 for an appointment or more information.

Remember children under the age of 12 should never ride in the front seat of a car with a passenger air bag.

If you are in need of additional information check out the Colorado Child Passenger Safety site or the NHTSA web site.

The department offers a free smoke detector and installation to anyone who is unable or would like more information on home safety. To schedule an installation or to request a detector contact the fire station.
