The Sober Prom is a program that is presented to Steamboat Springs High School students in the hope that students will reflect upon their decisions to drink and drive or even to get into a car with someone else who has been drinking. It is intended to communicate a very strong message to students that their lives are precious and that our community would be adversely effected by the loss of their lives. The premise of the Sober Prom Program is that kids will change their behavior if they are able to see how poor decisions could hurt the people they love. It is our hope that this program will compel kids to understand the finality of death, and to see the pain that their poor choices might bring to their parents, friends and the emergency workers whose job it is to deal with their aftermath.
The Sober Prom program begins with a mock car crash in which the Fire Department performs a rescue to try and save one of the students. All five students die on scene. The Coroner and ambulance service as well as the Police Department, Sheriffs Office and State Patrol are all at the scene of the crash. Friends of the five student fatalities erect memorials at the high school in remembrance of their friends. The program concludes with a video of the crash and parents reflecting on the loss of their child at an all school assembly.
The Steamboat Springs Fire Department is committed to spreading the word of the Sober Prom program and will assist any agency who requests information on how to present their own program. A complete press package (including video) is available by contacting the Steamboat Springs Fire Department. A Quicktime version of the video is available for viewing.
